I worked with school district personnel to understand the framework of First Step To Success and how it could be implemented into their grade schools. I also assisted with a variety of parent advocacy activites such as meeting with community leaders and writing informative papers regarding the current research in this area.

I conducted group therapy and performed psychodiagnostic assessments of children, adolescents, and adults in an acute care inpatient hospital and in their outpatient day treatment program. I led staff training seminars on suicide assessment, the use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in an inpatient setting, and effective treament of clients diagnosed with an Axis II disorder.

I provided individual and group therapy and crisis intervention as well as staff training at the number one Job Corps program in the nation (based on job placement and successful program completion statistics) which served primarily high risk Hispanic and Southeast Asian clientele. I also co-facilitated a nationally lauded stress management group presented at the 2001 National Job Corps Conference in Chicago as the model for other sites.

I assisted with the successful integration of a child with Asperger’s Disorder and significant behavioral noncompliance into a Preschool classroom. I implemented behavioral, social skills and communication strategies with the child. I taught school officials about the strategies I used, so the child would remain successful after my departure. Last, I assisted in creating his Individual Education Plan.

2002-2004 Cochlear Implantation

I was a research assistant on a team studying “The Relationship Between Cognitive Development, Adaptive Skills, Behavior, Social Skills, Language, Articulation, and Speech Perception for Children with a Cochlear Implant”. In this study a multidisciplinary team encompassing psychology, audiology, and speech-language pathology evaluted the above skill areas of children who have had a cochlear implant for at least two years. Our goal was to learn more about the emotional and behavioral impact of hearing impairment on young children. I coordinated the multidisciplinary team, conducted psychological assessments, provided feedback to families, created a database and assisted in the publishing of this data.
2002-2004 Efficacy of Floor Time for children with Autistic Disorder

I was a research team member studying the efficacy of Floor Time. The team was made up of psychology and speech-language pathology scholars from OHSU and the Hearing and Speech Institute.
2000-2001 Pervasive Developmental Disorder Treatment Outcome
University of California at San Francisco Children’s Hospital – Pervasive Developmental Disorders Evaluation Clinic

I was the primary investegator studying the treatment outcome of 33 teenagers diagnosed at age 3 with Autistic Disorder. My comparison groups included students who received at least 2 years of in home Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and students who received public education. I created a treatment history interview, completed these interviews, administered a full battery of diagnostic assessments (Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised, Autism Diagnostic Observation Scale, Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale, Behavioral Observation Scale and an appropriate cognitive assessment), wrote the clinical reports and gave feedback to the families. I wrote my dissertation based on these data.

I was the primary research assistant for the Origins of Mental Health research team. This team studied temperament using Mary Rothbart’s Infant Behavior Questionnaire – Revised (IBQ-R). We re-evaluated the reliability and validity of the IBQ-R, including the inter-rater reliability, predictive validity, and cross-cultural application of the instrument. I was responsible for organizing the research group activities, creating the interview script, interviewing participants and entering the data.

I was a research team member examining the cognitive effects of Phenylketonuria (PKU) on adolescents transitioning into adulthood. I created a questionnaire comparing typically developing adolescents with those diagnosed with PKU, wrote a literature review and supervised group activities.
